Designed in 1929 by S. Charles Lee, architect of Sid Graumanʼs famous Chinese Theater, this commanding French Chateaux-style building stands in the historic Mid- Wilshire District a block from the now-demolished Ambassador Hotel. Lee was inspired by silent film star Pola Negriʼs performance in the 1919 epic Madame Du Barry, directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Madame Du Barry, the mistress of Louis XV known for her luxury and opulence, met her end at the guillotine in 1793. In the 1930 film Du Barry, Woman of Passion, Norma Talmadge played the title role and the undiscovered Clark Gable was an extra.
