The beach at San Onofre is a sacred Native American burial ground and remains a ceremonial site. The terrain called Panhe is an ancient Acjachemen village dated over 8,000 years old. Father Junipero Serra performed the first Christian baptisms in California here in the 1700s. In 1968 President Richard Nixon bought part of the H.H. Cotton estate and called it La Casa Pacifica, nicknamed the “Western White House.” Prior to that, H.H. Cotton hosted Franklin D. Roosevelt, who played cards in a small outbuilding overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
