Point Conception derives its name from the Mission of the Immaculate Conception founded by the Spanish missionary, Fr. Junipero Serra in 1787. The extraordinary stretch of coastline above Los Angeles encompassing Santa Barbara and Santa Maria is often rightfully referred to as the “American Riviera.” Santa Barbara once boasted the world's largest silent film studio until it moved to Hollywood in 1922. Director Cecil B. DeMille filmed The Ten Commandments in the dunes near Santa Maria in 1923.
